Ubuntu Linux – Smooth install

Back to my software upgrade on my Dell Inspiron 8600 :
I still did reinstall WinXP on the first partition and it took me something like 1 hour… a bit more maybe, since applying all the Dell patches for the machine one after the other is…tedious. Mainly due to the fact that Dell just list all the patches without telling ou which one is really for you, and all the patches files have unreadable name like Q5362356.exe ior 7878373.exe GREAT ideas guys ! that’s one of the worst feature I’ve ever seen.
You have to note down everything you install well…

10 reboots later I did have a fresh WinXP installed.

I then inserted a Ubuntu disk and rebooted… answered 4 questions (language, keyboard, Timezone, Username)… and 15 minutes later I have a working OS. Everything at first look is working.
Screen resolution is perfect (And that’s a strange one : 1280×800), Sound works, trackpad works.. network works… wireless works… out of the box… I plug a USB key in… mounted automaticaly and open on my desktop, plug an external mouse… no problem immediatly I can hover on my desktop, no question asked, no annoying yellow bubble nothing….. duh ! Firefox and Evolution are there installed by default… I’m really impressed.. I never did have the same result even having spend countless hours on a Gentoo (but having learned more of course). And most of all I never ever opened a shell, I did not type any command line… It’s great.. really really great.

Ubuntu Linux – formating

I just finally decided to take some time to install the latest linux distro on my laptop (a Dell Inspiron 8600… yes I know… I should have bought a mac but more on this some other time). I tested the laptop with a Ubuntu live cd beforehand and I was struck by the quality of the result.

I first decided to shrink the existing OS partition, knowing that this kind of things tend to fail miserably. So I made a huge backup on another machine, and removed software rather uncleanly since I was sure I was going to reformat the disk completly. I then loaded up a freshly burned Knoppix and launched QTParted… that’s just amazing… I still thought this kind of software was only available commercially, no need to buy or … somewhat obtain PartitionMagic…. It just works and it is a dead simple operation…. and free.
And it seems that there is a plethora of thoses kind of tools…
